Customers should beware of phone calls demanding utility payments via phone during this COVID-19 pandemic. Telephone scams are on the increase during this period to both Residential and Commercial customers by dishonest people wishing to take advantage of this situation. These scammers are claiming that they are from the City, Municipal Lighting Dept. or with a State agency and are empowered to turn off their electric power unless they get immediate payment. Plattsburgh Municipal Lighting Dept. (MLD) or the City of Plattsburgh will never call and ask for a credit card or pre-paid debit card number over the phone nor will they ask for immediate wire transfers, or cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. Additionally, scammers can make the caller id look like the call is coming from an official government entity. If a customer receives a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from Plattsburgh Municipal Lighting Dept.(MLD), the City or State Agency and demanding payment to avoid disconnection, they should hang up and contact the MLD’s customer service line at 518-563-2200. Do NOT provide any personal information or financial information. Customers receiving such calls should also report the calls to the Plattsburgh City Police at 518-563-3411.
