Final Stage of Margaret Street Construction to Be Completed in June

(PLATTSBURGH- Wednesday May 1st 2024) - Construction crews are back onsite on Margaret Street between Cornelia and Broad Street to finish out the final stages of the Margaret St. Reconstruction project. The project replaced infrastructure dating back to 1902 under the road. Roads and businesses continue to remain open for vehicular traffic and pedestrians. This final work is expected to be completed by mid-June.

Although the majority of the work for the full-depth reconstruction project on Margaret, Court and Brinkerhoff Streets was completed in October 2023, some remaining work items such as the installation of new signal lights, pedestrian crossing facilities and new concrete stamped  crosswalks are in the final stages of completion.

New signal lights and pedestrian crossing facilities at the intersection of Broad and Margaret Street, Oak and Brinkerhoff Street and Margaret and Cornelia Street are being installed. Although ordered at the onset of the project, these items were not delivered to the contractor until March 2024. The installation of the stamped and dyed concrete crosswalks could not be completed in 2023 due to the cold temperatures at the end of last year.

Those who visit downtown may notice that some sections of sidewalk are being torn up and replaced. After the project was completed it was determined that some new sections of sidewalk did not turn out as well as anticipated and thus new concrete was poured. Sections of the new roadway are being removed in the areas of crosswalks so that new stamped and dyed concrete can be installed.

Roads remain open downtown, but there have been some detours around intersections as crews pour concrete for the crosswalks. These detours usually only last for a couple of hours. Please obey the direction of flagging staff and use extra caution around construction equipment. Businesses and restaurants remain open throughout construction. Please continue to support our downtown businesses during the final stages of construction!
